what is direct cremation?
Why Choose a Direct Cremation?
The financial benefit of choosing a cost-effective funeral speaks for itself. Aside from the financial aspect however, there are several reasons why a Direct Cremation may be favoured. Some people simply wish for an uncomplicated and understated send-off. Whether this is to avoid the burden of responsibility and other related difficulties that come with making funeral arrangements or it is due to the personal beliefs held by the deceased, a direct cremation may be the ideal solution.
Direct Cremations also offer a level of freedom in terms of how and where you say your final farewell. As the ashes can be returned to the family after the cremation has taken place it then gives you the opportunity to arrange a memorial service at a later date. Whatever the reason for not choosing a traditional funeral, direct cremation allows for you to arrange an appropriate alternative.
It may be the case that the number of attendees was limited, some friends or family were unable to travel or any other situation that prevented the funeral from going ahead as hoped. Direct Cremation gives you the chance to hold a funeral at a time and place that is most suitable to you. Many people choose to hold a memorial service at a location that was special to the deceased, scattering their ashes during the event.

What happens when someone passes away?
When someone passes away, the first step is to notify the relevant authorities, such as a doctor or hospital, so that the death can be officially certified. Once the death has been verified, you should contact your chosen funeral provider, who will guide you through the necessary arrangements and paperwork. They will also coordinate the collection and care of the deceased, ensuring that all legal and practical requirements are met with sensitivity and respect.

What is the difference between a direct cremation and a funeral with a service/ traditional funeral?
The main difference between a direct cremation and a funeral with a service or traditional funeral is the level of ceremony and attendance involved. Direct cremation takes place without a formal funeral service or the presence of mourners at the crematorium; it is a simple, dignified option where the cremation happens without any ceremony beforehand. In contrast, a traditional funeral typically includes a service where family and friends gather to pay their respects, and may involve readings, music, and personal tributes before the cremation or burial takes place.
Can family attend a service at the crematorium with a Direct Cremation?
No – Our direct cremation service does not offer a service. The deceased is taken to the crematorium for the cremation only. If you would like a service, one of our funeral directors will be able to assist you with organising a small service here at our funeral home or at your local crematorium.
If I choose direct cremation, can I upgrade or add a service later?
Certainly. If you determine during discussions regarding direct cremation that you would like to arrange a funeral service, we are available to assist you with the organisation of this.

What options do I have with the ashes after the cremation?
Can we still hold a service later I we choose direct cremation?
Yes, absolutely. Choosing a direct cremation does not prevent you from holding a memorial or celebration of life service at a later date. Many families find comfort in gathering together after the cremation to remember and honour their loved one in a way and at a time that suits them best. You are welcome to arrange a service either privately at home, at a venue of your choice, or through your local place of worship or community centre.
